Academy Overview:
The Criminal Justice Academy prepares students for employment or continuation of their education in a college or university in the Law, Public Safety & Security career cluster. The Criminal Justice Academy focuses on broad, transferable skills and stresses understanding and demonstration of the following elements of the public service industry: planning; management; finance; technical and production skills; underlying principles of technology; labor issues; community issues; and health, safety and environmental issues. The content includes, but is not limited to, introduction to the criminal justice system, police ethics and constitutional law, patrol procedures, traffic control procedures, defensive tactics and physical proficiency skills, first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation, interpersonal and communication skills, investigation procedures, court systems and trial procedures, correctional system, introduction to forensic science, crime prevention, property control, employability skills, and computer skills. Criminal Justice Academy students will have contact with personnel from local law enforcement agencies, correctional facilities and the court system. In addition to classroom academics students will have the opportunity to join and receive additional practical experiences through participation in the Criminal Justice Club, a chapter of the Florida Public Service Association (FPSA). Students who successfully complete the program may be eligible for Gold Seal/Bright Futures scholarships.
