Academy Overview:
The Sports Medicine Academy educates and trains students in the field of sports medicine, including skills in the prevention and treatment of injuries, physical therapy, rehabilitation, and occupational therapy. Hands-on labs are instrumental in giving students real-life experiences. Senior students will also participate in clinical experiences at health care facilities like the Andrew’s Institute, Baptist Medical Park, and others.
Health Science Programs
Each of the district health science programs is a four year major area of interest; each program focuses on high skill, high wage, and high demand careers. A large number of health care careers appear on the Statewide Targeted Occupations List and the Regional Targeted Occupations List, and they are listed as high skill, high wage careers. Participating students receive industry certifications, and students participate in clinical training opportunities. Upon program completion, students can pursue employment opportunities or a post-secondary education. Depending on the focus of study, students can continue their education at Pensacola Junior College, University of West Florida, University of South Alabama or many other post-secondary institutions. Students who successfully complete the program are eligible for Gold Seal/Bright Futures scholarships.
Core courses include Medical Skills and Services, Health Science I (Anatomy & Physiology), Health Science II (National Health Standards), and Allied Health Assisting III. Students that select to study Sports Medicine, Pre-nursing, or First Responder/Fire Science will take coursework geared toward their specific area of study such as Nursing Assistant III. Emergency Medical Service electives offered at West Florida High School of Advanced Technology include Fire Fighting I, Home Health Aide, and EKG. Students participate in clinical training opportunities at local hospitals and health care facilities during their senior year of high school. HOSA, Health Occupations Students of America, is the career and technical student organization that provides leadership, training, and skill training as an integral part of Health Science Education.
The mission of Health Science Education is to prepare students with broad, transferable skills, knowledge, and behaviors that lead to initial employment or to post-secondary training in the health occupations field. For a continuing education opportunity, the program Patient Care Technician is available at the Escambia County School District’s post-secondary training center, George Stone Technical Center. The Florida Certified Nursing Assistant Exam is given on site. The program is approved by the Board of Nursing. Financial Aid is available.
